Jayne's Restaurant Review - The Capital Grille by L. A. Keller

To celebrate a friend's birthday, three of us went to the Scottsdale location of The Capital Grille during restaurant week.  Their regular menu is very nice but we all opted for the specials, in fact, almost the exact same special!

We used the free valet parking and were seated immediately for our 6:45 pm reservation in a booth which was decorated with rose petals and happy birthday confetti. The restaurant wasn't full but it was already busy.

Two in my party started with the green salad and I had the wedge (chopped).  We enjoyed a great bottle of Decoy by Duckhorn red blend and their delicious breads.  The plan was to savor the dining experience so we didn't order our entrees immediately.

After finishing our salads, we ordered three bone-in New York Steaks, with the French Green Beans with Heirloom Tomatoes and Sam's Mashed Potatoes.  Being the cheese lover that I am, I also ordered the side dish of Lobster Mac 'N' Cheese.  And then we waited and drank our wine.  And we waited and waited. Finally our server stopped by and told us he had made a mistake and didn't place our orders right away.  To compensate, he brought us each a lovely amuse-bouche of a grilled pear with goat cheese wrapped in prosciutto.  Delicious, but alas as amuse-bouche is meant to be, only a bite.

Another thirty-five minutes went by before our entrees arrived.  All were overcooked. My friend ordered medium rare and hers was almost well done.  Mine was medium well and my other friend was medium to medium plus.  The Crab Oscar topping was perfect but the shrimp on one dish were warm on the outside and cold on the inside.  The manager brought a new serving of shrimp and offered to replace the overcooked steak.  My friend declined simply because she was concerned about how long that would take.

Despite the problems, the service was very good.  Although he admitted to making a mistake (which is commendable), we were never without service of some sort - whether it was another server stopping by, a manager or someone to refill our wine.  After dinner we were offered (and accepted a complimentary glass of Champagne). The manager comped the one dinner and we received two extra birthday desserts.  So all in all, the experience was pleasant and the food still excellent.

I will definitely go back when it's not restaurant week and try something different. Great ambiance and quality. I'm anxious for another helping of the Lobster Mac 'N' Cheese and would love to try the appetizer of Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella.

Remember to always drink responsibly and tip your bartender and servers.

Happy Dining,

Jayne
