Jayne's Restaurant Review - Greektown by L. A. Keller

My friend has been wanting some authentic Greek food for weeks. Lucky for us, I found Greektown which may be my new obsession. Located in an older building on 7th Street, north of Northern Avenue it's a family owned business.  Don't count on sitting at the bar because it only has a few seats and faces the kitchen area. There were already guests seated when the four of us arrived shortly after five pm.

We were seated in a booth with extra throw pillows, which I found odd but also comfortable. Décor was dated but the tables had white cloths and nicely folded napkins.  The owner himself waited on us and was delightful.  His sense of humor had a laughing and wondering - wondering what was in the dishes, what the dessert we would get could be, what the red wine was and if he was joking or serious. While some may find that bordered on the rude, we understood it was his sense of humor and he didn't disappoint us.

Unable to resist the appetizers we had the Kalamari, Teeropeetess (filo dough triangles stuffed with Parmesan and Feta cheese and cooked to a crispy perfection, served with two sauces for dipping), and Tsatziki (homemade yogurt, sour cream and cucumber dip).  I am wishing I had ordered a second serving of the Teeropeetess. I'm sure I'll sneak back for a take out order.

For dinner we each ordered a different dish. Mousaka (eggplant and potato with a meat filling), Chicken George (grilled chicken breasts sautéed with egg, lemon, artichoke hearts and mushrooms), Shrimp George (similar to the chicken dish but with shrimp) and Domades (ground pork and beef with rice cooked with Grecian herbs and wrapped in grape leaves, topped with augolemono sauce).

After stuffing ourselves with pita bread and all the appetizers, we were served a delicious (slightly salty) chicken and rice soup. Dinner came with a family style platter of Mediterranean Greek salad. Only one of us finished the entire dinner because the other three knew there would be dessert.

When we asked George what the dessert options were, he said there was only one. White chocolate cheesecake topped with baklava with white chocolate mousse.  You can see by the before and after we practically licked the plate.

This small, unassuming restaurant deserves the Best of Phoenix award it has received 15 times. It's my new favorite and I'll definitely be going back enough to be considered a regular.  Prices are very reasonable.  Three appetizers, four soups, salad for four, four entrees, three glasses of wine and one large dessert and our bill was only $135.

They don't take reservations for parties of four so get there early or plan to wait.
