New Mysteries by L. A. Keller

Here are some interesting new releases to check out. I've included one of my favorite authors and some that I've never read. It's exciting to me to immerse myself in someone's work which I've never sampled. This is the best way to break out of reading the same old story.

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

Lianne is one of my favorite authors. I’m always excited to discover what twists she can come up with. If you haven’t read her books, I recommend reading any of them or you can watch the series created from her book, Big Little Lies starring another Australian, Nicole Kidman.
It’s expensive at $17.39 for the hardcover and $14.99 for a Kindle eBook version so I will wait until the price comes down.

Here is the book description:

Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She’s immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don’t look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person that intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/director of Tranquillum House. Could this person really have the answers Frances didn’t even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer – or should she run while she still can?

It’s not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question.

A Ladder in the Sky: A Novel by John Boyne

I’ve never heard of this author but he’s written seven books for adults and children, one of which was made into a movie in 2008. Although the book was listed in the mystery genre on Amazon, the description doesn’t make me think there will be murder and mayhem. Regardless, I like trying different authors and especially those from outside of the U.S. I’m adding this to my ‘to read’ list and will include a review in the future.

Here’s the book description:

Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent – but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own.

Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful – but desperately lonely – older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war. Perfect material for Maurice’s first novel.

Once Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high. Moving from the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan and London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit and manipulation, preying on the talented and vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall…

Sweeping across the late twentieth century, A Ladder to the Sky is a fascinating portrait of a relentlessly immoral man, a tour de force of storytelling, and the next great novel from an acclaimed literary virtuoso.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

These are two authors I’ve never read. The cover sounds interesting and I hope for a page turner. With more than 2000 reviews, the book which was released at the end of October, 2018, promises to have unexpected twists. Although not a murder mystery it is a suspense and sometimes those are more exciting to read.

Here’s the book description:

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
Assume nothing.

Twisted and deliciously chilling, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Read between the lies.

The Shadows We Hide by Allen Eskens

This is a sequel to The Life We Bury which was a bestseller and the author’s debut novel. I am definitely putting the first book on my to read list before I tackle this one as I hate having to back track to find out about a character and I love series. The first book was nominated for an Edgar, which is the equivalent of an Oscar in the mystery world.

Here is the book description:

Joe Talbert, Jr. has never once met his namesake. Now out of college, a cub reporter for the Associated Press in Minneapolis, he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota.

Full of curiosity about whether this man might be his father, Joe is shocked to find that none of the town's residents have much to say about the dead man-other than that his death was long overdue. Joe discovers that the dead man was a loathsome lowlife who cheated his neighbors, threatened his daughter, and squandered his wife's inheritance after she, too, passed away--an inheritance that may now be Joe's.

Mired in uncertainty and plagued by his own devastated relationship with his mother, who is seeking to get back into her son's life, Joe must put together the missing pieces of his family history-- before his quest for discovery threatens to put him in a grave of his own.

Happy Trails,

Leslie
