Cowboys or Cowgirls wanted by L. A. Keller

I'm always interested in what a cowboy does in our modern world.  In my various searches I came across help wanted ads and I found the job descriptions interesting.

Here's one example for a Foreman of a cattle operation.

Seeking a foreman to manage two separate operations in Southern Arizona. The ranches are each approximately 200 cow/calf in size. Duties will include; feeding, taking care of both herds of cattle, calving, doctoring and riding young horses. Must be proficient and willing to ride young horses. The operation requires an astute individual who takes pride in watching and knowing his or her cowherd as one of the herds makes replacement heifers for the other ranches. We AI the entire cow herd and expect thorough knowledge about each herd. Must be willing to work with others and long days are sometimes required. The ranches are part of a larger operation. Good pay, bonuses and experience are only part of the benefits the job can offer.

And one for a ranch hand:

Full time position for the right person experienced in raising cattle: feeding, doctoring, calving, rotational grazing...you get the picture. We don’t work on horseback much as we graze our cattle on our own pastures. Pivot, and irrigation experience a plus. Grass-fed Angus, 60-70 mamas and we keep all our calves to raise for beef sales or replacement heifers. total 120+head and 2 bulls. Apartment, utilities, and beef included, salary depends on experience

What I love about both of these is that the cowboy or cowgirl needs to be proficient in everything cattle and horse related.  I always pictured a cowboy as someone who simply moves the cattle from one location to another. Obviously there is much more to the job. The cowboy/cowgirl  must not only have a strong knowledge of the animals but must be able to provide veterinary care, breeding and land management to its maximum potential.  That becomes even more significant in Arizona where many places do not naturally support grazing.

Despite all of the modern advances, this line of work requires long days, no holidays off, some isolation and a strong love of animals and nature. I'm not sure what it pays but since most places include room and board, it may not be a job you will become rich doing.  I can only guess that those who do are in it for love.

Happy Trails,
Leslie
