New Mysteries by L. A. Keller

Every month I try to post information on newly released books in the mystery genre. I find it exciting to check out new authors and, of course, read new releases from my favorite authors.

Here's a few recent releases.

Pieces of Her: A Novel by Karin Slaughter

Karin Slaughter is a bestselling author who has written 18 novels and sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.  To say I’m jealous would be an understatement. I haven’t read any of her work in a long time but I think I’ll have to check out this new release. At $13.99 for the Kindle version I will be waiting until the price comes down.

Here’s the description:

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . .
Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Gullaway Island; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one will ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Twenty-four hours later Laura is in the hospital, shot by an intruder who’s spent thirty years trying to track her down and discover what she knows. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumbs of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

Vox by Christina Dalcher

This debut novel is being compared to the Handmaid’s Tale. The premise sounds interesting and frightening. I will definitely put this on my to read list.

Here’s the description:

Set in a United States in which half the population has been silenced, Vox is the harrowing, unforgettable story of what one woman will do to protect herself and her daughter.
On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than one hundred words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her.
This is just the beginning...

Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are not taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words each day, but now women have only one hundred to make themselves heard.

...not the end.
For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

The Other Woman: A Novel by Sandie Jones

Any character named Pammie instantly sets my teeth on edge but maybe that is all part of the author’s master plan - to make even her name so annoying you will want to read how Emily deals with her. Even before I read the author notes I guessed she was from the UK. The name Emily keeps popping up in British novels I’ve read recently. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Here’s the description:

The most twisty, addictive and gripping debut thriller you'll read this year.
HE LOVES YOU: Adam adores Emily. Emily thinks Adam’s perfect, the man she thought she’d never meet.

BUT SHE LOVES YOU NOT: Lurking in the shadows is a rival, a woman who shares a deep bond with the man she loves.

AND SHE'LL STOP AT NOTHING: Emily chose Adam, but she didn’t choose his mother Pammie. There’s nothing a mother wouldn’t do for her son, and now Emily is about to find out just how far Pammie will go to get what she wants: Emily gone forever.

The Other Woman will have you questioning her on every page, in Sandie Jones' chilling psychological suspense about a man, his new girlfriend, and the mother who will not let him go.

The Line That Held Us by David Joy

I’ve never read this author but he has two other books, one of which was nominated for an Edgar award which is the mystery/suspense equivalent of an Oscar. I don’t read many male authors so this one will be special. I can’t wait to read and review it.

Here’s the description:

When Darl Moody went hunting after a monster buck he's chased for years, he never expected he'd accidentally shoot a man digging ginseng. Worse yet, he's killed a Brewer, a family notorious for vengeance and violence. With nowhere to turn, Darl calls on the help of the only man he knows will answer, his best friend, Calvin Hooper. But when Dwayne Brewer comes looking for his missing brother and stumbles onto a blood trail leading straight back to Darl and Calvin, a nightmare of revenge rips apart their world. The Line That Held Us is a story of friendship and family, a tale balanced between destruction and redemption, where the only hope is to hold on tight, clenching to those you love. What will you do for the people who mean the most, and what will you grasp to when all that you have is gone? The only certainty in a place so shredded is that no one will get away unscathed.

Happy Trails,

Leslie
